IEEE CPU simulator contest  2010

for undergraduate students

The information is now available here:   http://www.computer.org/portal/web/competition
How to register here: http://www.computer.org/portal/web/competition/submission

Note:  the deadline for registration is 11 January 2010
So, hurry to make a team, and submit your registration.
The actual working program will be submit not later than 9 April 2010

A simple simulator is easy to write.  Students need only basic understanding of computer organisation (no pipeline/superscalar things are required). Architectural idea will be a challenge.  I can arrange a tutorial to discuss what to be done if students are interested.  I do have some examples of CPU simulator and a few interesting weird architecture to show you.

Here is an example by Ajarn Chatchawit at dept. of math. (our alumni who is still a hardware guy).

You can play with it.  Try the following program:  LIT, 1, LIT, 2, +,       then click step to see step-by-step execution.  Enjoy!
