PhD Seminar in Computer Engineering 2nd semester 1998
Writing project
The aim for this activity is to improve the writing skill. The assignment
is to write 3 "imaginary" research papers. The topics are invented
by each student according to his/her interest and area of research.
Each paper is supposed to have the quality suitable for submission to any
international conference or journal.
-
We are not interested in "reality" of the content. Hence, the reference,
the result of the experiments etc. can be totally imaginary.
-
This is an excercise of your "imagination" and how you plan to do publication.
-
The group activity is to provide "feedback" to the writing quality.
How to do the project.
We will spend two weeks for each paper. Each student complete one
paper and hand out to all other students in week one. Please make
sure that your friends get a copy of your paper and have enough time to
read it before the class. During the seminar, each student will be
given 15 minutes to be commented by all others. The session
is NOT the presentation, it is for explaining your point of view when being
questioned. The goal for the commentors (all other students, except
the author) is to point out what is not good about the paper. The
author then collects all these comments and rewrite his paper to be read
again next week. The length of the paper depends on individual.
As I always tell you, the quality of the class varies with the effort each
of you put into the class.
We will do 3 papers. All final version of these papers must be
handed in (electronically) and is counted as the contribution for this
class. I hope that all students can see the improvement of his/her
writing after this excercise.
